Becoming a gainer: how I started gaining on purpose

Gaining with a plan instead of by accident: how to start as a gainer, what actually helped me, how to stay healthy, and where to find like-minded people.

For a long time I just "ate more" and wondered why little happened, or why I only felt bad. Becoming a gainer, to me, now means: with intention and with a plan, not flying blind. Here's what I wish I'd known earlier.

Why gain at all?

For me it's a mix of pleasure, self-image and the good feeling of watching my body grow. Nobody who doesn't feel it has to understand it. What matters is only that it's your own wish, not pressure from anyone else.

Start small

I began with a single extra meal a day, not a crash program. The body needs time, and the pace that feels good is almost always the slower one.

What helped me

  • Calorie-dense drinks on the side, because drinking is easier than yet another plate.
  • Set times instead of constant snacking, which was calmer on my stomach.
  • Tracking progress (photos, notes), not to judge myself, but to spot patterns.

Your head eats too

Some days it flows, others it doesn't. That's normal. People who beat themselves up over it usually quit. Being kind to yourself beats any meal plan.

Take health seriously

Gaining is not a free pass. If you have pre-existing conditions (blood pressure, blood sugar, joints), talk to a doctor first. That's not a buzzkill, it's self-care.

Where to find people

Alone it's a slog, together it's fun. In the gainer community you'll find encouragers and others walking the same path. If you like, create a profile and share your goals.
